MY SLEDDING REPORT

03/10/2010 - Still good riding to the North of Young's, I can no longer get out so we are done for the season. Unless we have a big snow.

03/05/2010 - ICE CONDITIONS VERY DANGEROUS

CONCORD, N.H. -- Ice is disappearing fast on many New Hampshire waterbodies, creating dangerous conditions in places. With warmer weather expected in the coming days, the situation is likely to become even more treacherous, according to Col. Martin Garabedian, New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Chief. "We're urging all outdoor enthusiasts to use extreme caution on the ice from this point forward," said Garabedian. "We've had reports that ice conditions are hazardous and changing daily on many larger lakes and ponds, especially around inlets and outlets." Fish and Game is strongly encouraging ice anglers not to wait for the April 1 deadline to remove bobhouses from the ice, and to use extreme caution as they do so. "Keep a close eye on ice conditions and get bobhouses off the ice as soon as you can, safely," said Garabedian. With ever-changing ice conditions, it is critical to assess ice safety before you go out by using an ice chisel or axe to chop a hole in the ice to determine its thickness and condition. Continue to do this as you get further out onto the ice, as thickness will not be uniform over the waterbody. Though all ice is potentially dangerous, the Cold Region Research Laboratory in Hanover, N.H., offers a "rule of thumb" on ice thickness: There should be a minimum of six inches of hard ice before individual foot travel, and eight to ten inches of hard ice for snow machine or ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) travel. Keep in mind that it is possible for ice to be thick, but not strong, because of varying weather conditions. Weak ice is formed when warming trends break down ice, then the slushy surface re-freezes. Be especially careful of areas with current, such as inlets, outlets and spring holes, where the ice can be dangerously thin.

Tips for staying safe on the ice include:

* Stay off the ice along the shoreline if it is cracked or squishy. Don’t go on the ice during thaws.

* Watch out for thin, clear or honeycombed ice. Dark snow and ice may also indicate weak spots.

* Small bodies of water tend to freeze thicker. Rivers and lakes are more prone to wind, currents and wave action that weaken ice.

* Don’t gather in large groups on the ice.

* Don’t drive large vehicles onto the ice.

* If you do break through the ice, don’t panic. Move or swim back to where you fell in, where you know the ice was solid. Lay both arms on the unbroken ice and kick hard. This will help lift your body onto the ice. A set of ice picks can aid you in a self-rescue (wear them around your neck or put them in an easily accessible pocket). Once out of the water, roll away from the hole until you reach solid ice.

Ice safety should be paramount for anyone recreating on New Hampshire’s lakes and ponds. Don't assume ice is safe just because it's there.

02/05/2010 - I’m a little behind with my reports, we have had a lot of great riding the last several weeks. We have been over to Bosebuck for lunch and also to the Sportsman Lodge. These are two of our favorite stops, good food and great people and a lot of fun. The trails are in great shape and will get even better with some more snow. We took a ride over to Oquossoc , ME today for lunch, the trails were in good shape and we had a very nice ride. We met everyone at the Carr Bridge after using the lake and 139, 140 to get there. 139 is now open. We took 139 to 5 north. Then we took 20 north past the Tin Camp to Maine. Our connector trail could use some grooming but it was certainly OK. ME ITS 84 was also in good shape, not great but usable. After a very nice lunch at the Gingerbread House we headed home. We reversed our trip until we got to 1150 where we picked up the Lake and came across to the beach at the Dam. We gassed up at Dorman’s then headed home. It was 121 mile trip.

01/11/2010 - We went to Errol for lunch today, what a ride. We met two of our group at Ramblewood on 139 and went the back way (140) past Young’s Store to Carr Bridge to meet the rest of the group. We took 139 to 5 and then 18. We met two groomers on the way to Robbers Roost, the trails were very good, flat and fast. We had a nice lunch then stopped in at Cote’s to look around. We headed home on 18 to 112 ,143, 20, 5, 139 back to Young’s for gas. We went home on 140, I don’t think the lake is ready yet. 107.4 miles today, we may go to Colebrook tomorrow.

01/10/2010 - We were out for our first ride of the season today. We left the house went down the hill through Lopstick and over to 139 to 140 North, at the Deer Mountain turn we took 147 South to 140 North at the sand pit. Back up to 139 and home. 24.4 miles, all of the trails were flat and fast.

On trail 143 from Jct. 2238 for several miles the club has built a narrow trail to the side of the road, please stay on this trail as there will be many logging trucks coming thru and any confrontations could be cause to shut the trail down. After thru this section the plowed logging road will be shared with snowmobiles and logging trucks for a mile or 2 please stay far right and 10 mph this section of the logging operation should be done in about 1 month hopefully we can get through it without any incidents that cause trail closure. Please remember these are logging roads you are snowmobiling on not the other way around the trucks have the right you have the privelage! At this point trails closed on our system are: Trail 142 jct 542 to 2702 roaring brook CLOSED trail 141 jct. 2702 to 35 Indian CLOSED Trail 146 jct. 217 to 486 Shatney Mtn. 12/12/2009 - The trails North of town should open 12/18/09 check the club website http://www.pittsburgridgerunners.org for updated info.

03/10/2009 - We are back from our 8 day snowmobile trip. We left Pittsburg on March 1 and headed for Rangeley by way of Oquossoc. We met everyone at Carr Bridge, We picked up 139 to 5 then 112 to 20. At the border we picked up ITS 84 over to Oquossoc, the trail conditions were normal, bumpy. Then we got on the lake and headed to Rangeley. The lake was 80 percent ice, no snow for lubrication and cooling. It was a long slow trip. We stayed at the Rangeley Inn, very nice. Day 1 68.2 miles.

After a good nights sleep we headed to Bingham in a snow storm, on ITS 84/89, 84 and 87. Along the way we had to cross what looked like a river and not on a bridge, down on the ICE. That was interesting. As soon as we got about 20 miles away from Rangeley the trails were perfect, groomed and flat. We spent the night at the Bingham Motor Inn. It was 82.2 miles that day.

We had very good meals at a small luncheonette across the street from the motel (North Country Variety). "Good Stop".

On 3/3 we headed to The Birches in Rockwood. It was a very nice ride on 87, and 88. We were on several local trails along the way, all the trails were perfect. The mileage for the day was 79.2. The food at the Birches is great. If you go up that way you should stop.

The next morning after a large breakfast we headed North. The trip to Pittston Farm is only 42 miles, so after we registered and had lunch we went for a ride, and what a ride it was. All of the trails were perfectly groomed and in excellent shape. They are all maintained by Pittston Farm. We ended the day with 77.1 miles of spectacular riding. Everyone agreed that Pittston Farm was the highlight of the trip. All you could eat great food and clean, warm and cozy rooms.

The next morning we reluctantly left and headed South through Northeast Carry and Kokadjo on Rt. 66 to Greenville. It was a very nice ride with breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. We spent the night at the Black Frog. We parked our sleds on the lake in front of the Black Frog and had a nice dinner in the restaurant after some shopping in town. We traveled 74.1 miles that day.

The next morning we left Greenville in a snow storm and headed back to Bingham on ITS 87 and local trails. They were in perfect shape even with the 6 inches of fresh powder. We traveled 79.2 miles that day.

The next morning we headed South on 87 and 84 back to Rangeley. When we got within 20 of Rangeley to trails were horrible. It was a combination of warm weather and LACK OF GROOMING. In my opinion Rangeley caters to the skiers not snowmobilers.

The Next morning we elected not to go down the lake it had a lot of slush on it. We went around the lake to the North to Oquossoc, this would have been a good ride if the trails were groomed. After we gassed up we headed home, The trip was 93.3 miles of hell. None of the trails were groomed not even ours. The warm weather took a toll on then. One bright spot was our stop at Bosebuck for lunch and a rest. We tried the trails to the North hoping they would be in better shape, but they were not. Other than the time in and around Rangeley we had a ball.

The next time we head North we will probably go through Eustis and Straton.

The total trip was about 640 miles and eight days.

02/11/2009 - We did some riding in and around Wolfeboro, NH. The trails were in good shape considering the temps were around 60 deg. F. I was sledding most of the day with NO GLOVES ON what a blast. We unloaded the sleds at the golf course in Wolfeboro. We picked up trail 22S to 26N then got on 19N. At Polly Crossing we got back on 26N. We stopped at the Club warming hut and got some very helpful info on our lake ride. We got on Mirror Lake and crossed with no problem other than some slush. We crossed Rt.109 and got on Lake Winnipesaukee. We crossed Carrie Beach and went back to the golf course. Very nice ride.

02/04/2009 - Went out to lunch and then a very nice ride. We met at the usual spot and then took 141 to 142 to the Buck Rub. We had A very nice lunch the then backtracked past Young's and over on 140 to 20N. When we got to junction 3130 we took 137 over to Magalloway Road 112 and flew down to junction 480. We jumped on to First Lake and proceeded briskly down the lake to the beach at the dam. We then took 139 and 141 to Young's for gas. Then we took the lake to 139 at Rt. 3 and on home. It was a 51 mile ride on the best trails of the season. The high for the day was 4.6 F.

01/26/2009 - Went for a ride today. I took the Lake over to the boat launch and over to Carr Bridge on 139 and 140. We took 138 to 5N, up to junction 480. We took Magalloway Road East to 20N. 20N was a great ride up past the Tin Camp. We then got on 144 to 5N to 145 to 144. Then we decided to go to Bosebuck for lunch so we took 20 to 84. The trails were very good into Bosebuck. After lunch we came back on 84, 20 and 144 to 5S. It got interesting at this point. Heading South from junction 930 to 475 we met a groomer plowing the trail and a bulldozer plowing. After a brief discussion with the dozer driver we found out that the section of 5S had just been closed for logging. Oh well I think we need more signs. We took 20 to 450 and then went up to Diamond Ridge, the view was great. We came back to 20S to junction 623 went up 112 Magalloway Road to 1770. Then got on 143 to 3130. Halfway down 143 the trail number changes to 137. We then took 20 all the way to junction 1510 then got on 140. The section of 140 to junction 28 needed to be groomed. We took 140 to Young's for gas. I then headed home by way of the lake and 139. The ride was 88.4 miles and the temperature was around 5 F, it was cool.

01/23/2009 - I took a short ride this afternoon. Out my access trail onto 139 past Ramblewood and over to 140. I went up 140 all the way and picked up 141 and came back down past Depot Camp to Four Corner's and up 140 to 139 and home. About 30 miles on flat trails.

01/23/2009 - Very good trip report from website user. I have been to Bulldog Camps and can also recommend it.
Hi John,
As a fellow snowmobiler, I wanted to share our recent snowmobile adventure with you. Last weekend, 5 of us did a 300 mile overnight trip. Starting in Pittsburg, NH we headed out at 9am from a friend’s cabin on our way to Jackman, ME. The temperature was -25. Surprisingly, with all of the layers, we were never cold. The heated shields and gauntlets helped. The trails were in perfect shape (picture in lower right hand corner). We rented a cabin in Jackman, ME at a place called Bulldog Camps. The cabin (in the middle of nowhere) had no electricity, a wood stove for heat and gas mantle lamps. When we arrived the owners of the cabins had dinner waiting for us, which was great after a 7 hour 150 mile ride. We stopped 4 times for gas, totaling about 50 gallons of fuel. Highly recommended!

01/21/2009 - We went out for a quick ride after lunch. We left the house on 139, over First Lake to the boat ramp and down 140 to 131 then 130 to 21 over to the dam at Lake Francis. We then took 141 North past the Buck Rub. We headed North on the Indian Stream Trail past Depot Camp and then got on 140 South. We stayed on 140 all the way to Young's. After we gassed up we headed home on 139 and First Lake. 55.4 miles today. ALL TRAILS WERE 100% FLAT.

01/20/2009 - We met at 10 AM and headed North on 139, 140 and over Deer Mtn. on 141 to 5S. We then picked up 145 to 144, very nice ride on flat trails. It was nippy, the temp. never went over 11.2 all day. At the junction with 20 we headed South then South on 143 (great ride). When we got to 112 we decided to go to Errol for lunch so we headed South. At Robbers Roost we picked up 18 and went to Errol on flat trails. After lunch at the Northern Exposure we headed home. At Robbers Roost we made a Left on 134 to 133 then on to 5N to 138 to 140, we passed two of our groomers (always nice to see) on 140 they were on the way out to groom. We gassed up at Young's and headed home, 110.8 miles today.

01/19/2009 - We went through Colebrook to Errol for lunch. We started with a nice ride past Grand View Snack Shack on 21 all the way down to the tunnel under Rt. 26 on to 7A, 7, 5, 110 (ungroomed and a mess) to 115. We then picked up 18E just South of the buffalo farm (groomed and nice). Then on into Errol for lunch at the Northern Exposure. After lunch we headed home on 18W to Robbers Roost, then 112N to 20 to 5S. We jumped on the lake at South Bay and flew over to the boat ramp at the dam. We gassed up at Young's then headed home. we traveled 105.2 miles, nice ride.

01/14/2009 - We went for a quick ride in the cold, I wanted to ride a sled I just got for our grandchildren to use. We had a nice ride on 139 past Ramblewood and over to 140N. The trail was flat and fast, when we got to the Deer Mtn. turn off we came back down on 147S to Four Corners. Through the pit and up 140 to 139 and home. The trip was 25.1 miles and the temp. was -5, everything worked and we even stayed warm.

01/13/2009 - We went to Colebrook today and had a great ride and lunch. We met at our usual place and headed South by way of Granite State Power ( My wife had to get a new heated shield for her helmet ). We took 140S to 141 and then 142 through the Village. We picked up 20S at Junction 486. We stayed on 20 through Canaan and West Stewartstown and down the tracks to Colebrook. We had to clear a tree from the tracks part of the way down. The tracks were snow covered but not groomed. They were still in good shape. We had a very nice lunch at Howard's then headed home. We took 18 out of Colebrook, we passed the Notch View and picked up 126. We then picked up 21N and stopped at Grand View Snack Shack for a rest. WHAT A VIEW it's a shame it's not open any more. We then took 131 over to 20. We picked up 5n and took it all the to First Lake. WE jumped onto the Lake at South Bay and flew across the lake to the boat ramp at the Dam (DO NOT GO CLOSE TO THE DAM) We got on 139S and went to Young's for gas and the paper. Then we headed home on 139N and the lake. We had a lot of fun and covered 75.1 miles. Dangerously cold temps Thur. & Fri. PLEASE be very careful.

01/13/2009 - We are going to Colebrook today maybe down the tracks - will update later. Dangerously cold temps Thur. & Fri. be very careful.

01/12/2009 - We went for a ride today the trails were perfect and not crowded; we saw no more than 15 sleds all day. We started at Ramblewood and went down 139 to 1st Lake. We cut the corner over to the boat ramp. 139 is still not open because of high water. We met the rest of our party at the trophy bridge at 10:30. We headed out on 139 to 5S all the way down to 133 then 132 onto Diamond Pond and over to the Sportsman's Lodge for a very nice lunch. We headed back across Diamond Pond to 5N up to 20. Our ride on 20N was perfect; we turned right onto 143 to Junction 450 then went to Diamond Ridge. We had some snow and wind on top of the ridge but it was still nice. We left and picked up trail 143S at junction 450, trail 143 was perfect. At junction 2238 we headed East on 112 down to 480. We jumped on First Lake and flew down to the boat ramp at the dam. We got off and went to Young's for gas then headed home on 139 on the Lake. 89.2 miles, what a ride.

01/10/2009 - I worked as a flagman at the Vintage Snowmobile races. We had a good crowd show up in spite of the cold temps.

01/08/2009 - We went out for a quick ride this afternoon and ended up at Bosebuck for a cup of coffee. After meeting at Ramblewood We went over Deer Mt. by way of 139, 140 and 141. We have a lot of snow on the trails. Take your time on the corners they are juicy. I took 5 South and 20 to the Tin Camp. On parts of 5 the snow had drifted so several time the snow came up the hood of the sled and hit me in the face. That was fun. Then 20 to ITS 84 into ME. The trails in ME were good, but could use a grooming. After relaxing for awhile we headed out. Back to the Tin Camp and then South on 20 to 5 When we got to junction 249 I was the first over the groomed trail. It was like riding on a cloud. It was starting to get cold when we gassed up at Young's. We took 140 up to 139 and home. The trip was 72 miles.

01/06/2009 - We went to Errol for lunch today and had a great ride. We met at the usual spot and headed East on 140 and 139. We picked up 5 to 20 and 134. We picked up 18 at Robbers Roost and went on in to Errol. All of the clubs have done an excellent job with the trails, they were all in great shape. When we left we picked up 112 ( Four Mile Brook Trail) at Jct. 401 at Jct. 267 we took 136, 20 and 5 back to Jct.1150 then 139 to 140. We got gas at Dorman's and headed home. We logged 99.6 miles.

01/05/2009 - What a ride! We met part of our party at Ramblewood and the rest at the Bridge on River Road. We took 140 to 138 over to 5 South. We then took 131 and 130 (I think) over to the Sportsman's Lodge & Cabins. We had a great lunch and spent some time talking to Roger & Linda. This is a must stop on your travels. After lunch we went part of the way on Diamond Pond and then picked up 5 North. We did the Pisgua Loop in record time it was 100% flat not 95% - 100%, what a ride. We worked our way over to 112N and 143N down to 20 S and 5S. We headed home by way of 138 and 140. Some of the group got gas at Young's and some at Dorman's. We did 98.1 miles on perfectly groomed trails.

01/05/2009 - We are going for a ride South and East of Pittsburg today, I'll report later.

12/27/2008 - Warm with some rain for one more day then turning colder. I don't think it will hurt the trails, It may actually help.

12/26/2008 - Excellent trail conditions today. My Daughter and I left the house and picked up trail 139, went past Ramblewood and over to 140 N, The conditions were perfect, it was about 15 degrees and sunny. The groomer was ahead of us and we started to catch up to it as we approached junction 911 so we hopped over to 147 N and continued on North, what a ride. When we got to junction 1734 we headed South, we passed our groomer about 2 miles South of 1734. We continued South to Four Corners, then cut over to 141 N. When we got to Depot Camp we stopped for a rest. We then continued North to Junction 35. We then did the entire length of 147 back to Four Corners. We went to Dorman's and topped of the gas and headed home for lunch. The morning ride was 54.1 miles. After lunch we took two of the grandchildren out for a ride. We ended up riding 25.3 miles, they had a ball. Then it was back home. 79.4 miles total on FLAT trails.

12/25/2008 - We didn't get out today before the grandchildren showed up. The power was out most of the night. I started the generator about 8 AM and the power was restored shortly after that. The station reporting was down about 3 hours because the UPS ran down. Anyway, I did get out on my access trail and trail 139 just to check for blow downs but I was in good shape. My daughter and I will be out tomorrow. The rain last night was just what we needed. I will report on trail conditions in the afternoon.

12/23/2008 - First short ride of the season. We met at Ramblewood late this afternoon, we then went down 139 to 140 (Perry Stream Trail) and headed North. All trails were flat and fast, WHAT A RIDE. Some of the turns were juicy but we have a lot of powder on the trails and some ice under the snow. When we got to junction 911 we stayed on 140 until we got to the Deer Mtn. turn. We then went on trail 147 South, we were the first to use it after it was groomed. Unbelievable!! I CAME down that trail, it was late in the afternoon the views were beautiful. When we got to Four Corners we met up with one of our groomers. We then crossed the sand pit and picked up 140 North. The entire trip we never saw another sled. We got home just as it was getting dark. We did about 27 miles, A good shake down trip. Everything worked. We will be going out on Christmas day. I will let you know how the ride was.

12/21/2008 - As of Monday morning December 22nd 2008 the entire PRR trail system will be open. Please be careful the snowstorm we are currently getting is a powdery snow, and early season conditions still exist. We need to get things packed down to create a base. The PRR groomers will be out during the day Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday packing trails and filling water bars before taking a day off Thursday to be with family for Christmas. Trail conditions are early season powder with an icy base, rocks, stumps, and other objects may be just beneath the surface. As soon as the trail system is groomed we will have a better individual trail conditions report. All trailside businesses in Pittsburg will be accessible begining Monday, be prepared to break trail on Monday if you are out early as the groomers will not be out till Monday morning also. Trail maps are not yet out on the trail system we will be working on this before Christmas, so have you new PRR map with you they are available at most lodges and stores in Pittsburg.

12/18/2008 - IT'S TIME TO PLAY!! The East side of Rte 3 will have most trails open beginning tomorrow Friday December 19th 2008. There will be no lodges or businesses including gas or food with trail access for this weekend. Please stay off trails marked closed, if you are on the West side of Rte 3 you are riding closed trails. All trails in the PRR system that are on the East side of Rte 3 will be open with the exception of trail 5 from Swift System jct 894 to to Magalloway Rd jct 480. all trails East of this will be open on the PRR system. PLEASE be very carefull there is a sheet of ice under much of the system which can make riding challenging. Trail parking will be either Deer MTN or Magalloway Rd.There is no other access on the system. Travel on the West side is only permitted from Deer Mtn to East Inlet area. We hope for more trails open by Monday after the next possible storm. Enjoy the trails!

12/18/2008 - Word is some Northern trails will open for the weekend. Keep checking back.

12/16/2008 - WE NEED SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some coming this week.

12/15/2008 - I think the Northern trails will open by the weekend keep checking back for updates.

12/14/2008 - Looks like the trails will not open tomarrow ---- keep checking back for updates.

12/13/2008 - Well I registered my sleds today in NH & ME. I also took a ride on my access trail it was soooooo nice to get out and play in the snow!!!!!! I was a little cold without the proper clothing but it felt GOOOOOOOOD.

11/01/2008 - The club is marking the trails, that's a good sign. We will be sledding before you know it.

03/22/2008 - My son and I took a quick ride to check out the trails. We stopped at Ramblewood and picked up the club Satellite phone and left on trail patrol. We took 139 to 140 to Four Corners. On to 141 and over Roaring Brook. We went through some very deep snow. It was like riding the powder in WY. What a ride! We then picked up 147 North to 140 and came on down to 139 and home.
